I've been extremely hesitant to write this blog post, mainly because I know a lot of my peers aren't going to agree with me. I got a lot of heat for stating my opinions about this topic on Twitter, but it doesn't bother me. There is no argument from the opposing side, at least in my opinion.
I am completely against the word "faggot". This will never change, there's not a possible argument you could tell me that would support those who use this word. I was never really bothered by this word until I heard it so much while around my brother's friends and recently, when the rapper Azalea Banks used it on Twitter against Perez Hilton. It's a disgusting word that is stemmed from hate and oppression.
People today put the word in their Twitter bios and usernames. You see it all over on Tumblr. Homosexual men think it's attractive to call each other faggots, especially through social media. To anyone that uses this word, I consider uneducated and ignorant. What's the point? Do people really think it's an attractive quality, because it's just a turn off and if someone uses the word, I don't want any part in their life and vice versa.
Azalea Banks even went further and defined the word herself. The thing I will say, that again, many people may not agree with, but if Perez Hilton were to call her the N word, I guarantee he would of been on the news, or online magazines. He would of gotten so much heat for using the word and everyone would of been offended. So why not when the word "faggot" is used? I hope I'm not sounding biased it's just something I strongly believe. The N word is just as disgusting.
In school, people would always ask me if I were gay. Instead of using the word gay, it was always faggot. Instead of approaching the subject in a polite manner, they always resorted to that offensive word. Rappers like Lil Wayne and Eminem use the word in their songs, maybe that's why people find it acceptable to use. We glorify the way celebrities act and the words they choose to use. If you search websites like Pinterest and Tumblr, you see people with tattoos and shirts that glorify this word, too.
I can honestly admit that I've used the word when I was younger, but I realized how terrible of a word it is. I grew up. I hear this word weekly, whether it's someone saying "He's a faggot" or "He's such a fucking faggot, that's nasty!" (I have honestly heard these, and if you follow me on Twitter, when my brother's friends are around I usually tweet the ridiculous things they say).
Another instance on Twitter, I posted about a song making me emotional and got the reply, "Cause you're a fag.". After tweeting back that I hated that word, I was told to get over it. Really? This was coming from a gay male. Why do people not realize how offensive the word is? If someone on the street were to yell the word at one of them, you know they would get pissed off, they would be so offended that in the year 2013, we're still throwing these disrespectful words around to others.
Maybe it was just the way I was raised, to always treat others will respect. Never treat someone in a way you'd never want to be treated. As a child, I was called 'fagboy' by family and it always offended me, maybe I'm just more mature than others my age. Maybe, I just expect too much of others, we learn about Harvey Milk and other LGBT activists that had to go through the oppression and were de-humanized for fighting for what they believe in. I don't want that to go to waste. I don't want the word to become something the next generation still throws around, whether they're joking or degrading another individual.
Also, I can't remember where I saw it, but it was reported that the word faggot was used over 1 million times on Twitter last year. That's just one social media.
Using that word in this blog post made me cringe every time I wrote it and a part of me feels like a hypocrite for using it.
